Adding Color to Animal Print

Wearing animal print seems to be a topic of styling some adore and others do not. I have a couple of coats, a skirt and a few sweaters with the pattern plus two denim fitted jackets in my closet. I love prints and I see animal print as one option to experiment when mixing tones.

This coat was a place to start when building this outfit. Here I chose colors in greens and gold to highlight the print. Black, white or gray would also work but I think color makes this outfit more reflective of my style. If you are interested in adding coat to your wardrobe, check out the first picture in my links because I think it's a particularly great design.  Do you like animal print and how do you wear it?

  1. I agree, adding some varying colors is so reflective of your style and looks amazing on you. No simple black and white or grey for you - bold and bright are your trademark and this is no exception - you look amazing! Zebra seems to be on the way to joining cheetah as a print for the season and it's nice to see how you are wearing it… and doing so in a way that is all your own!

    1. Thank you Kim for the lovely and kind comment. I've worn a lot of black in the past and I'm enjoying color right now.

  2. I love how you started with your coat. So true that when winter is horrible then you need to start backwards as most people only see the coat rather than what you are wearing under it.

Teal with gold is so lovely. Very vintage.

Great simple but bold look Ann…and I love that lime vintage chair!

    1. Thanks Suzanne, I seem to always start with the coat. Guess I'm a cold weather dresser! I have a lime green bag that would be great with this outfit also.

  3. Animal prints with bright colors is always a great choice. I like it with blue, even red or pink looks great with animal print.
I like your skirt and the boothies are fantastic. Have a nice sunday.

  4. love animal print and love how you've sported it with teal and gold, such a fabulous color combo!. And so pretty booties and bag!
I'm a huge fan of leopard and red, but I realize it's not everybody's cup of tea!

  5. I like animal prints, but I'm tired of seeing leopard all the time. Zebra makes a nice change! And I love how you paired it with turquoise/teal and gold. That shiny blouse is gorgeous!

  6. Ann my dear, you are a coat person. Marvellous coats in your wardrobe and this is one I really like. Seems very spring (and it is still cold where you live, isn't it?). I love animal print in fashion but I am careful not to wear more than one piece (or two very small ones like a little belt and scarf). The colour of your skirt is the same colour as your bag. Amazing.

    1. Yes, I am a coat person. This is a spring coat, I'm waiting for the best price on a couple of winter items now. Last night it was super cold again. I can't photograph outside so indoors at the studio will have to do for now. I would have guessed that you like animal print, I think it suits you!

    2. Your indoor photography is as good as your outdoor's. You don't need to go out into the cold for that.

  7. I love animal prints and I am currently preparing a post about zebra + red! Therefore you can imagine how much I love your look, Ann. Fantastic coat and the mix of colours is unique.

  13. What a beautiful outfit Ann. The first photo is so elegant and stylish but I found the photo with the gold blouse to
be my favorite. I love the pop of sophistication the blouse adds. What a delight to see this post when we are having
    another freezing day in NYC!

    1. I now know why in photo shoots there's a stylist. We were concentrating on getting the lighting right, using a flash and capturing a general mood that I forgot to open my jacket. The outfit needs the gold to balance out the green. It's really cold here in Minneapolis also. Spring is coming, it's been a long winter.

  14. Lovely outfit and for me unusual colour combination, but it works:) Once again your photo locations are giving some wonderful inspiration, if only I would leave the house lol. I adore animal print and it's pretty much the only pattern I allow in my wardrobe. My preference is black and white and I in animal print I have have booties, a jacket, a couple of blouses and a scarf or two. I feel it has longevity and transcends trend...that's my humble opinion any way :) Ann you look beautiful in these pictures.

    1. Yes I agree there's a longevity to animal print, classic and timeless. I use unusual and intuitive color in my artwork so I'm trying to bring this to my clothing choices. Hope you do a post soon. I want a better look at this new hairstyle!

  15. Oh Ann, I just love this combination!! The last photo is my very favorite - with both colors showing up with the print. It isoooo beautiful! :)
I love animal print, but I seem to be more of a leo person, I guess. I only recently started thinking about getting a zebra print for myself. Your coat is stunningly pretty!

  16. Ann...I need to raid your coat closet!!! This is another fabulous coat. I purchased a light weight leopard coat from H&M last year for $15 and you will probably see it on the blog this week. I really like this paired with the teal green - such a pretty color combo.

Since I grew up in such tropical weather, coats were just not my thing. I am enjoying wearing lighter coats thats more suitable to the California weather. I recently purchased a polka dot trench that I am dying to wear.

  17. I knew you would find a way of pairing an animal print in a whole different way with a whole different kind of hue. This is so striking and warm. It just feels so right, the color combinations just seem to feel at home together. Very lovely, Ann.
By the way, are you keeping warm out there in your miserably cold weather?

    1. The weather is getting to be a bit much, even for a life long midwesterner like myself. Wind chills again tonight -20. It's impossible to take pictures outside and not miserable. Glad you like these colors Trina, they remind me of you in some way!

  19. I love animal prints and actually I have a jacket with same print as your coat. Unexpected but very beautiful colour combination, I think it looks more interesting than mixing with black, white or grey. The blouse that is slightly seen from under the coat looks beautiful too.

  20. You know, normally when I see a mix of animal print and color it has always or most of the time would be of red/black and animal print. You have given this mix a new breath of air! It is pleasant to see teal here.. another inspiration!

  21. Oh, I do love this zebra jacket/coat on you Ann! It really pops against the mustard and teal. I also love your opaque tights. I don't think I have a single animal print anything, LOL. But, I would love a pair of animal print flats!

  22. I have only a cardigan in that print, and I can't match it with nothing! Yes, I find it terribly hard to combine my cardigan...that's why I don't like buying animal printed clothes. Why then I love your coat?? You have chosen the perfect green tone to match! And I also like the mustard colour of your blouse! And, finally... your today's location is terribly artistic as a background of your photos!!

  26. I disliked animal print for years. It only started growing on me recently with a purchase of what I call my "little wild handbag" (thanks Suzanne for naming it that). I think I might be ready to make another addition to my closet. Perhaps animal print shoes this time.
The coat looks very elegant on you. I think keeping the rest of the outfit simple really helped.

  28. Hello! Can I just say how fabulous you look?! Seriously love how you worked the animal print in with those colors. So rich!!! :) Yes. I have "a thing" for animal prints. Lol! I have leopard print boots & slippers. And I dearly want a scarf but I haven't found the perfect one yet. I made some style boards on polyvore since I don't actually do OOTD. Take a look next time you visit doll. Happy Monday!

  29. Among all the animal prints, I like zebra the best ... and I sure like this one on you. Its much more interesting with these rich, tertiary colors than with other neutrals, and this particular combination is a tour de force. I particularly love the contrasting textures in those shades. I'm an old fudd- duddy about leopard and cheetah. But the more abstracted the prints are, the better I like them. I can appreciate skillful handling of animal prints, and love it when they suggest an homage rather than a mimic of fur ... like this one! Beautifully done.

  33. I do love some animal print as well. But, when I went through my Image Consulting course I came to realize it really doesn't line up with who I am. Boy,there is a lot to truly buying the right pieces for oneself. I really like the color combination that you chose and the top adds a bit of elegance.

  34. I love this combination of animal print and colour, but you always do things up right. I love the photo of you standing on the chair. Art demands it. I hate the word cougar so within the last couple of years I've not been wild about animal prints so when I finally bought some print pants, I wore all of my animal prints together, a super ultra therapy I guess. I'm now friends with animal prints and whoever wants to think cougar, knock yourself out.

  41. Somehow I always picture animal prints either with garments of the same color(s) as the print, either with red. This combination is really unexpected, yet so perfect! I especially love the green.

  42. I'm not always a fan of animal print - I think when it is fury material I don't like it so much. Ha. I do love this coat though, it looks fab with the green top and mustard top! Mustard and green together = win.
