Structured Jacket

This jacket refers to many of my passions. I enjoy historical clothing, early American quilts and the color pallet of my own paintings. The jacket is deep inky black, my camera sometimes reads black as brown.

I'm wearing some older jewelry to add a touch of romance to this outfit. My husband and I were exhibitors at a craft show on the Pier in San Francisco in the early 90's. We decided to bring my mom along for fun and at that time she hadn't flown on a plane before. Mom loved this trip and art show. She used her friendly personality to visit with many of the artists in this show. She purchased these earrings for me and my sister in law gave me this lovely bracelet, both of which I cherish. I really don't remember very much about this show, just one of many shows, but I do adore the memory of my mom walking up and down the hills of San Francisco at the age of 70.

  2. The structure of that jacket somehow manages even to tone down that psychedelic handbag. That's genius. Love these photos again, especially the second-to-last one. My most treasured pieces usually are the ones with a story behind them too.

    1. I've had this "psychedelic" patterned bag forever. I'm guessing I got it when the hippie stuff first appeared on the fashion scene. I do mean the second time the hippie stuff came around, maybe 1994? I buy designer bags at Marshals and TJMax for a good price when I see them.

  4. The jacket is stunining. It reads brown on my screen so I am glad you clarified it is black:). This style jacket to me is very much a reflection of what I see as part of your signature style. It's difficult for me to put into words but I think you have articulated it well in your description of why the jacket is so special.

    1. So true, this jacket is my signature style. I saw it in the store and it finally came up at a 30% reduction this past weekend so it was mine. It's the fit and inlay design that is so me.

  7. Your wardrobe pieces are always so structural in nature. Let me guess...you want everything in its place and like things done your way? LOL

The tailoring looks impeccable on the jacket.

I am loving that jewellery. So unique.

  16. Ann! hello, sweet-one. Hey, are you Scandanavian? Sometimes I see me in you, ya know? I'm a Swede. My Dad is Scandinavian and my Mom is Danish. I do safely say, that your 70 year old hiking Mom on the hills in San Francisco is definitely a wonderful memory. I can so see you following in her path, if not literal. LOL Those jewelry items are priceless. So priceless.

    1. My Dad's family was from England and Mom's was German and Scottish. I look so much like my Dad's sister sometimes he calls me by her name. MN is such a Scandinavian area and I'm often asked if I'm a Swede. Dad's family came to the US in the 1700's so who really knows? Thanks for your comments!

    2. Oh that is interesting. I love to hear about people's backgrounds.

My Dad's and Mom's family's' came to Utah in the 1800. My Dad's Mom lived on the same property her parents owned and the sold a half acre to my Dad, so we lived right next door to my Grandma until her death, 3 weeks prior to my 15th birthday. She was a strong influence in me learning my heritage. She would always tell me what the area looked like when she was a child. So cool.

How tall are you? I don't get asked if I am a Swede because I am only 5'5". My Dad was 6'4" and blonde and blue eyes and had a very Swedish last name; so most everyone knew he was a Swede. lol

Thanks for your fun compliments and visits. I always enjoy your posts and feel you are a very talent artist because it shows in your ensembles, for sure!

    3. Fun to hear your background. I'm 5'5" also and I'm a bit short waisted. I need short jackets and sweaters so finding them can be a challenge. Heels help too. I think I do look taller in my pictures. I would have guessed you do be 5'7" from your pictures. My Dad has a brother that was 6'4" also. Wish I had some of these genes!

Touching story of your Mom at your art show in San Francisco and the history of your jewelry, which adds meaning to your amazing ensemble.

  25. Ann, you have such amazing style. I really love your photos and each one is so artistically shot. Your pattern mix on the jacket and your purse is a great look. I am impressed that your mom could walk the hills of San Francisco at 70. It was a challenge for me in my 20's:-)

  28. Hi Ann

I have just found your gorgeous blog and what an inspiration you are. Just what I need at the moment. I have had a few years with elderly parents health problems but luck has been on my side and it looks like things are starting to take a turn for the better. I have now decided to stop wearing black and add some colour into my wardrobe. We are just coming into the warmer seasons down here in Christchurch New Zealand, so it is the ideal time to reinvent myself at 56. Absolutely love your style. regards Sue

    1. Oh Sue I've been there. I've spent the last 13 years closely involved with the ups and downs of elder care. I was wearing only black, I guess I was in some type of morning. I started my blog in response to these difficulties. I think adding some color is a good idea. When caring for beloved parents it can be hard to find time for yourself. Wishing you all the best and I enjoy hearing things are taking a turn for the better!

  31. You know, this outfit ... although it's not vintage ... reminds me of the way that Judith (of the Style Crone fame) puts together vintage in such modern ways. All the real and implied history in such a sleek and contemporary cut just impresses me in so many ways! Just lovely, and fits so beautifully. Sweet story about your jewels, and they work so well! Gray shoes ... I would not have thought! But perfect. I have a similar pair that I haven't worn ... inspired as always by you, Ann!

    1. I think you are right, I can see Judith's style in this jacket now that you mention it. I will restyle it in another future post because I think the skirt and shoes are a bit conservative for it. In the store it was paired with a rust leather circular drop waist leather skirt that was fabulous. Thanks Jan for commenting.

  40. The richness of the patterns and colors here, alongside nature, enthralled me. The leaves on the steps, echoing the print on the jacket somehow, struck me especially. Lovely. I also appreciated the story behind the jewelry. It makes it that much more beautiful. XXOO
